For the last six years FGNHA, Storm, Twins, and SJR teams have put together a hockey sock donation drive for people who are experiencing homelessness on the streets of Winnipeg. We are hoping to do it again this year!
The kids take previously loved hockey socks, and fill them with toiletries, treats, and necessities for those experiencing homelessness here in our city. We then drop them off to a street outreach team, and then they hand them out to people in the inner-city that need them. The people receiving them in the community are so excited to get these care packages. We hope to have each player collect and put together at least two stuffed socks, if they can.
Ideas of items to donate;
socks toques mitts shampoo & conditioner (small containers) deodorant toothbrush & toothpaste chapstick lotion kleenex feminine hygiene items chocolate nutrigrain bars
This year we are seeing if all FGNHA, SJR, Twins, and Storm Teams would like to join forces again to put together hockeysockdonations. Let's see how many we can get this year! If your team would like to just collect money, and use it to purchase sheets of bus tickets to donate - that is a huge gift as well! Please be sure to tag @fort.garry.north.hockey on instagram with #fortgarrygivesback with pics of your team stuffing their socks! I have attached posters to share with your teams.
If your team is interested in participating, please email Denise Ferreira (deniseferreirahd@gmail.com) to confirm. Please have all sock donations delivered by Sunday December 17th. They will be handed out to those that need them during the week of Dec 18th.
The delivery drop off location is 110 Galt Ave. This location is a Free Furniture Bank supported by Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) and OPK Manitoba (Ogijiita Pimatiswin Kinamatawin). They are a hub for a number of Street Outreach teams in Winnipeg, and they are excited to share their space with us.
Drop off could be any Saturday morning from Sat Nov 18th until Sat Dec 16th between the times of 10am - noon. If you need to make other arrangements for a delivery time, please email Denise to set that up.
